Small Business Taxes Gone Wild In California

I estimate that 99% of Californians do not understand the implications of the new small business tax that Governor Jerry Brown signed into law yesterday. This law would mandates online sellers like Amazon.com and Overstock.com to start collecting sales taxes on items shipped to California if they have some sort of relationship with an affiliate. Online Advertising Campaign In Today's Internet

During the early days of the internet, it was far easier to compete because there were fewer websites to compete with. Today in the 21st century, if you want to successfully compete with hundreds of thousands of competitors, you’ve got to have a well planned and strategically sound online advertising campaign in place. Do this before you ever publish your website. If you’ve got all your planning done ahead of time, you’ll get traffic to your website sooner rather than later.

Maintaining your website is an expense. If you’re also paying for ads, the income you derive won’t add up to much without sufficient traffic. The time you spend planning your online advertising campaign and developing the best strategies for your product or service will pay you big dividends, decreasing the time between launch and profits. Let’s take a look at how you can customize your advertising campaign to your advantage.

The *big* search engine is Google. They handle about 75% of all searches online. So it makes sense to make your website Google friendly. Google.com provides detailed information on how your website is ranked, how the spiders work, good links versus what Google deems spammy, along with a wealth of resources which show you how to increase your visibility. In fact, there’s so much information, it will take a while to go through it all. On the other hand, what you’ll learn will help you tailor your strategies for a successful online advertising campaign. This makes your effort entirely worthwhile. Think of all your competitors who neglect to make this thorough investigation!

For example, we’ve all seen websites which have advertisements which are completely unrelated to the page content, trying to sell you cell phones, gadgets and books on a page with an article on obtaining a mortgage. Perhaps the website owner figures if you can buy a home, you can thus afford these items. However, search engines will penalize you for irrelevant advertising. Target your ads to each page as the product or service pertains to the interest of the reader. Google’s AdSense program uses a variety of algorithms to scan the content of your page and match your page with ads of likely interest to that reader. While you can certainly add affiliate program ads, using Google AdSense drives traffic and revenue to your site far more quickly. This single element can give your online advertising campaign a hefty jump start.

Everyone knows that linking is important to a well planned online advertising campaign. What’s not so well known is that the quality of the site you’re linked to impacts your rankings. The search engine spiders are pretty “smart” and sophisticated these days, so be choosy when you select your links. If the Google spiders detect that most of your links within text are click-throughs to a potential sale, rather than information of value to your reader, you’ll take another hit in the rankings. The spiders may even exclude that page from future indexing.

It’s most important that you do your homework and find out what helps and what harms your search engine ranking. If you don’t, your online advertising campaign may become a failed campaign, setting your online marketing efforts back.

Publishing some of your content in relevant e-newsletters with high readerships is another excellent technique for any online advertising campaign. When you’re brainstorming for new ideas, always keep “relevance” and “quality’ in mind. Then watch your profits grow.

Should You Install Subdomains?

First a definition. A subdomain is a website that hangs off of your main website. For example, my website is alextran.com.  My domain is “alextran” and my third level domain (TLD) is “com.”

If I were to install a subdomain called newsletter, for example, it would be accessed by typing “newsletter.alextran.com.”

The subdomain would rely on the domain name server or DNS in order to work, much like the domain alextran.com. So installing a subdomain would require that you wait until it gets added to the DNS before you could use it.

So why would people install a subdomain as part of their website design? One reason would be to add a different section or category to their website. The newsletter subdomain example that I gave above would be a potential use. I could also add a subdomain for “services”, “seo-web-design”, “training” and so on. The subdomains would then be:

services.alextran.com, seo-web-desgin.alextran.com, and training.alextran.com.

I could have done this, but I didn’t. Here are two reasons why.

1. Most people don’t understand subdomains. Since they don’t understand it, they don’t know how to access it. Most people do understand subfolders for categorization. For example, most people would understand “alextran.com/training/” rather than “training.alextran.com.”

2. The search engines have a thing against subdomains, at least according to my tests. I have put up several websites with subdomains and compared them to websites that I built using folders. More often than not, the search engines — Google — didn’t like the subdomains. If I put up a website too fast with subdomains, Google would deindex the whole website. This was not a good situation.

Based on my experience over the last 9 months, I have avoided putting up websites with subdomains.

Should you install subdomains? It’s up to you. I don’t. But if you do decide to install subdomains, put them up slowly. Don’t add too many subdomains too fast. You may find yourself deindexed and all that hard work would go to waste.

How To Build A List Even If Your Website Is Under Construction

Got A Domain Name But You’re Not Ready To Launch A Website?

It used to be that domain names were very expensive. Up to only a few years ago, it use to cost upwards of $50 to register a domain name. Prior to that, domain names cost a few hundred dollars and up. Today, you can get a domain name for under $10.

The downside though, is that all the short domain names have been bought. You can’t go out a buy webdesign.com or design.com or web.com unless you are willing to pay big bucks in the secondary market. On the other hand, you can buy sanramonwebdesign.com for $9.95 at Godaddy.com.

If you have been thinking that maybe now would be a good time to establish your web presence, I strongly urge you to go register a domain name. Pick one that has the keywords that your business offers. Then register the “.com” version. If the “.com” version is not available, then get the “.net” version. But do try to get the “.com” version even if you have to rearrange the keywords in the domain name a little. The reason you want the “.com” version is that people are used to typing “.com” and less so “.net” and even less so “.org” and “.biz” and “.info” names.

After you get your domain name, don’t just leave it sitting idle at your domain name registrar. Put it to use. One option is to park it at Sedo.com and get paid for the traffic. Another option is to load up a page to collect the name and email addresses of people who happen upon your domain name because of your keywords.

Don’t worry, this is easy to setup. Here are the steps:

1)  Get a good web host. I recommend using http://www.premierewebhost.com.
2)  Load WordPress using CPanel and Fantastico. These options are available at a good web host.
3)  Upload the All In One SEO plugin.
4)  Upload the Feedburner plugin.
5)  Upload the Launchpad theme.
6)  Create a Feedburner account.
7)  Inside your Feedburner account, choose the”Publicize” tab and click on the “Email Subscriptions.”
8)  Activate your Email Subscription and copy the email ID that Feedburner gives you.
9)  Enter the email ID into the Launchpad control panel.
10) Enter your Feedburner url into the Launchpad control panel.
11) You’re done!

You now have an automatic way to collect your visitor’s name and email so that you can build your list even before you’ve built your website.
